The Second Lap

I've officially been at my new job as an assistant account executive at Martin Retail Group doing regional advertising for several GM car brands for 2 whole weeks! I really enjoy the people I work with and am learning A LOT about cars!

Starting the second job is quite a different experience from starting the first... I feel a lot more confident in my knowledge of the industry and am willing to participate & offer suggestions a lot sooner into the game. However, I have come to realize there is always so much to learn at a new position - no matter if it's your first or fiftieth job!

Here's a brief insight into what I have learned so far about advertising, account services, GM & cars in general:

1. In the car business, dealers have the final say no matter what!
2. It's a lot easier to submit creative requests if you have a media planning/buying providing you with all the spec, deadline & cost information!
3. Not every day of work should be so stressful that you are constantly yelling at your computer and it's okay to take a lunch break :)
4. Be nice to the creative team because you never know when you'll need a rush ad created!
5. The Hummer is not a gas guzzler, despite popular belief.
6. It's important to take time out of your day to research/ read news on your client's industry.
7. Titles don't mean much when it comes to getting the job done.
8. Even the smallest, most insignificant tasks take time and must be done thoroughly.
9. Some people actually want to buy Geo Metros! http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/16/geo-metros-going-for-big-money-on-high-gas-prices/
10. There are some REALLY nice cars out there: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/19/1961-ferrari-california-spyder-sells-for-record-10-894-900/

Although I able to take lunches, I still enjoy popcorn for lunch b/c it's soooo good! But the good news is I don't have to eat at my desk = less popcorn kernels in my keyboard ;)
