Come Again?

This past year, I feel like I have been experiencing deja vu with the plethora of movie remakes, return of 80s fashions and my current living arrangement, all very reminiscent of my childhood. So without further ado I will take a minute to point out my top 10 best (and worst) comebacks this year so far. I've also included some informational links for your reading (and viewing) pleasure.

Top 10 Retro Moments of 2008
1. Indiana Jones returns- when I was in middle school I was obsessed. I think I watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom at least once a week and Harrison Ford was my George Clooney. Here's info on the newest chapter in the Indy story: http://www.indianajones.com/site/index.html
2. The comeback tour of New Kids on the Block - I'm not ashamed to say that I owned the new kids sleeping bag in my youth. However, I will probably have to miss out on their upcoming concert. Let's be honest, they're a lot cuter without the early 90s hair... http://nkotb.com/
3. Moving back to Joan & Denny's house - it still feels surreal. Somebody pinch me...
4. Fraggle Rock movie rumors - I mean who didn't love the muppets as a kid? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481649/
5. Paula Abdul releases a single - Although her newest release couldn't even be considered good and she's definitely crazy, there's no denying that Straight Up was crazy good back in the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu4NcgQZucE
6. Chronicles of Narnia - one of my favorite book series of all time as a child finally got made into a blockbuster hit! The sequel, Prince Caspian, comes out soon! http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia/
7. Mario Kart - although not a glorious as the original Nintendo, the Wii version of Mario Kart brings fond memories of hours spent in the basement of my neighbor's house as a child. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart
8. The Apple/Mac is at the cutting edge of technology - Yes, we still have our family's first-ever computer which was a 1984 Mac fully equipped with programs such as Clarisworks and Word Perfect. Ours seriously looks like the computer: http://oldcomputers.net/macintosh.html
9. Sleeping over at my friend's house - only this time it's because I've had a bit too much to drink to make it home...
10. Bold & vibrant colors - I distinctly remember a pair of jean shorts I had in the early 1990s that were this color. Let's just cross our fingers that we will never have to wear scrunchies or scrunched down socks ever again. http://oldcomputers.net/macintosh.html

I heart 4 day weekends

This Memorial Day weekend was a great way to kick-off summer and all the adventures to come! Not only was I off work for FOUR WHOLE DAYS but it got me excited about all the visitors and plans I have for the coming months!

I am a bit sad that today was 80 degrees and tomorrow's low is supposed to be in the 40s! According to Tom Shilling and Weather Underground, this particular weather pattern is described as a "pneumonia front", which if you ask me doesn't sound fun at all... http://www.wunderground.com/US/IL/022.html#SPE

But on a more positive note, here are some things that made my weekend great!

Top 10 Things I Did Over My 4-Day Weekend (in no particular order)
1. Went out w/ Claud in the City - although we didn't make it back to Uncle Fatty's...
2. Watched my little brother graduate from high school (and realized I was so old that some of the people that I graduated high school with are now teachers at Neuqua).
3. Tried sushi (and liked it) for the first time!
4. Went shopping & spent $20 for a dress, t-shirt & underwear!
5. Lunch with Melissa at Baja Fresh - great company & great food
6. Saw Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull & loved it! Yes, it was over the top, but in true Indiana Jones fashion.
7. Wore flip-flops because it was finally warm enough!
8. Had extra time to catch up with friends & Justin via phone convos :)
9. Night out with some of my fav guys despite the out-of-it waiter.
10. Enjoyed an m&m blizzard from DQ.

Oh and I hope you visited your local Buick, Pontiac & GMC dealer this past weekend ;)

Oh the places I go (or will go)...

Tonight I attended my little brother's high school Baccalaureate (religious/musical graduation ceremony). I fidgeted impatiently as I sat waiting for the ceremony to begin in the familiar auditorium that I had spent many long hours during my choir/musical days of high school. As the violinists began their first piece, I couldn't help but think about how much I'd rather be sitting in my sweatpants, enjoying a bowl of ice cream and watching the premiere of "So You Think You Can Dance". Instead I had been guilt-ed into sitting through a slew of boring, pretentious speeches given by overly enthusiastic high schoolers.

However, as the ceremony began some of the speeches actually began to penetrate through my boredom and I found myself really listening to some of the advice directed toward the senior class. All the talk of looking toward the future, thinking about the kind of person that you want to become and enjoying every moment of our fleeting lives started to hit home.

I started to think about how fortunate I really was to have such a great family who welcomed me back into their home and help support me to help me advance my career and save money for the future. Two things became clear: 1) It's important to constantly set goals for yourself and continually strive to achieve the goals, no matter how small. 2) I need to work on appreciating what I do have, even if it's not the most ideal situation.

So I came up with a list of the top 10 places that I'd like to visit before I turn 40 and why those places made the list:
1. San Diego because it's always 70 degrees and gorgeous!
2. Ireland... again (it still counts!)
3. Vegas - while I can still make bad decisions without getting in too much trouble
4. Cruise of the Mediterranean to Greece, Turkey, Italy & Egypt
5. Disney World/Land - there's no such thing as being too old for Disney
6. Memphis or Nashville - to appreciate a completely different culture a short distance away
7. Long Island or the Hamptons - hopefully to see Anna
8. Napa Valley with my boy = pure bliss :)
9. Tropical island such as the Bahamas
10. Washington DC - because I love history!

While those are some places that I aspire to visit, I have come to appreciate a few places here in Naperville/Chicago in the few weeks that I have been back:
1. Potbellys - three words: ice-cream cookie sandwiches
2. Target Greatland - I literally could spend $1,000 on clothes/accessories alone
3. Wendys for Frostys with mix-ins (imagine a McFlurry + frosty)
4. Cardinal Fitness - it's the place where I can go to get away & de-stress. Also I'd be 50 lbs heavier without it due to all the snacks in my parent's house!
5. Starbucks because I have a gift card & is my reward for getting up early.
6. Golden Nugget - only with Jill between the hours of 1-5am
7. Union Station - public transportation is ingenious
8. Bar Louie in Naperville - Wednesday night $5 bucks of beer with good friends, what more could I want?
9. Bolingbrook's outdoor mall
10. Egg Harbor cafe - great for a guilty-pleasure brunch or light lunch depending on your mood, but always so good!

The Second Lap

I've officially been at my new job as an assistant account executive at Martin Retail Group doing regional advertising for several GM car brands for 2 whole weeks! I really enjoy the people I work with and am learning A LOT about cars!

Starting the second job is quite a different experience from starting the first... I feel a lot more confident in my knowledge of the industry and am willing to participate & offer suggestions a lot sooner into the game. However, I have come to realize there is always so much to learn at a new position - no matter if it's your first or fiftieth job!

Here's a brief insight into what I have learned so far about advertising, account services, GM & cars in general:

1. In the car business, dealers have the final say no matter what!
2. It's a lot easier to submit creative requests if you have a media planning/buying providing you with all the spec, deadline & cost information!
3. Not every day of work should be so stressful that you are constantly yelling at your computer and it's okay to take a lunch break :)
4. Be nice to the creative team because you never know when you'll need a rush ad created!
5. The Hummer is not a gas guzzler, despite popular belief.
6. It's important to take time out of your day to research/ read news on your client's industry.
7. Titles don't mean much when it comes to getting the job done.
8. Even the smallest, most insignificant tasks take time and must be done thoroughly.
9. Some people actually want to buy Geo Metros! http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/16/geo-metros-going-for-big-money-on-high-gas-prices/
10. There are some REALLY nice cars out there: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/19/1961-ferrari-california-spyder-sells-for-record-10-894-900/

I've officially been out of college for a whole year!

This weekend I attended Justin's graduation from Mizzou and realized that I have officially been out of college for over a year now and on the 6 1/2 hour drive back to Naperville, started thinking what I miss about being in college...

1. Thursday nights - BBQ Thursdays, Greys w/ the roomies, Harpos, Tonic - what could be better?
2. Trops, seriously they should open up nationwide.
3. Different schedule & the ability to set it up yourself (aka class schedules).
4. Dancing in fling... and everything else leading up to it.
5. Greek Life, I have yet to find something to be quite so obsessed about...
6. Big 12 between classes.
7. Not knowing the true meaning of "boredom".
8. Finals food at the sorority :)
9. Most of my friends living within 10 mins of me.
10. Living in the same town as my boyfriend :(

If there is one thing I've learned over the past year, it's don't dwell in the past and look forward to the future. So I resolved to hold myself accountable for at least 10 things I want to accomplish over the next year.

Top 10 things I want to accomplish in the next year:
1. Take a trip with Justin, hopefully to Vegas.
2. Stay in touch with my friends that are far away and make a new one!
3. Don't give in to the gallons of ice cream, bags of chips and snacks that my mom keeps well-stocked, aka don't gain weight and stay in shape.
4. Make plans to move out of my parent's house at some point.
5. Keep a positive attitude.
6. Never stop making plans to advance myself, my relationships and my career.
7. Get a second job, volunteer or join a club.
8. Go back to Mizzou for Homecoming & plan a tailgate (mark your calendars now).
9. Go to a Cubs game.
10. Finish unpacking from my move back to Naperville.

Life in the 'Ville

So what's new in my life? Well a lot, actually!

I recently accepted a job as an assistant account executive at an ad agency in Naperville! And on May 4, moved back in with Mr. & Mrs. Mills despite my long-standing opposition to moving back home. So far, I have survived the first week & a half and am going strong! I'm not sure how long the honeymoon stage will last… but in the meantime here's a list of the perks I have discovered about living at home!

10 Best Things about Living at Home:

1. I feel like the coolest person in the house even if I only go out 1-2 nights/ week

2. Free & convenient parking (aka my driveway)!

3. I don't have to go grocery shopping... I just put things on the list & they appear in the fridge!

4. I can actually afford to go out on the weekends

5. I take a walk down memory lane every time I wake up in the morning

6. Someone will notice (and pound on my door) if I forget to set my alarm in the morning!

7. I know the best routes to take if I am running late

8. Good opportunity of getting a discount at a bar/restaurant because there is a good chance I went to high school with at least one person working there.

9. If I run out of socks, I can always borrow a pair from my mom until I have time to do laundry.

10. My parents have a cleaning lady :)
